I’ve just finished installing the latest WP upgrade, so I’m officially up to date with ver 2.3.1.  The upgrade process was smooth and painless. What a great CMS!

This Last Man Standing thing looks like a pretty cool art competition. Some great artists will be competing with some awesome artwork being displayed. I’ll be keeping an eye on it for sure. Check it out:

This is an amazing graphic technology. Anyone who has ever re-composed images can see what a time saver this would be. Even angry ex-girlfriends could cut their ex-boyfriends out of their favorite photos with ease. Developed by Ariel Shamir of the Efi Arazi School of Computer Science, The Interdisciplinary Center

HDDVD, BlueRay, HDMI, 60+ inch LED DLP Dolby HD 7.1 channel surround… The list goes on and on. With the right stuff, home movies are better than watching a movie at a theater with some old, blown speakers, dim contrast, and a punk kid kicking the back of your seat. Home movies are good… Almost TOO good. While watching FLYBOYS tonight on a blueray player with the aforementioned equipment at hand, I couldn’t help but pick out every little bad special effect detail. The picture is so stunning and precise, that any slightly modeled looking CG is blindingly evident. Well, to my eye at least. I imagine this is the same fate shared by other artists who spend their days staring at pixels on a display with many lines of resolution more than your typical blueray player. Now, don’t get me wrong, the guys at http://www.dneg.com/ are top notch. FLYBOYS just happened to be the movie I watched tonight before I sat down to write this. There are plenty of other flicks that have far worse CG. Take Matrix for example. In the second one, NEO looked like a rubberband man. There’s also tons of times while watching network HD tv that I catch the occassional missed focus. Again, something you would never see in an SD signal on your mom’s 20 inch council TV. Bottom line: I wouldn’t trade today’s tv tech for anything. The CG and softfocus will vanish or my eyesight will deteriorate one of these days.

NASA is working with ASU to scan and make available the flight films from the Apollo missions. I find this type of stuff very interesting. Not only is the moon an amazing thing to look at, but the technology being used to scan the original film is quite exciting as well. The scans are being done at 14 bits and up to 200 pixels per mm. That’s over 5000 ppi. This is all fine and dandy, but the really cool part is that anyone can access, view, and download these images from the moon missions once they’ve been scanned and added to the website. The flyover pictures might be pretty boring unless you’re studying the moon’s surface for some reason, but the pictures from the handheld cameras on the surface would be pretty neat. I’m currently downloading a raw image to check it out in all its high res glory. The download is only 13% done with over 160MB complete.
